[ It's on this day that the Archadian Empire finally announces the two men who will rule the Empire until His Excellency is well. While the Senate will not be reinstated, many of the former royals who once served as senators step out to show their support of the Lord Regents. Due to the failed assassination attempt made on Emperor Larsa Ferrinas Solidor's life, the need of a Regent is clearly necessary.

Despite there being so little communication regarding the Emperor's current state, the Archadians are quick to fix the damage done by hearsay and rumors. In order to keep possible enemies at bay, namely the Rozarrians, Emperor Larsa had already devised a creed vowing to announce the following men to rule in his stead if ever a tragedy was to befall him. ]

"In accordance with His Excellency's wishes, I, Judge Magister Alayre Zargabaath, and my fellow colleague Judge Magister Noah Gabranth, are hereby announced as Lord Regents of the Archadian Empire and acting lords of all the provincial territories under Archadian Dominion."

[ This of course means that even Nabradia and Nalbina Fortress will remain under Archadian rule from this moment on. Any territories subjugated by the Empire will stay under the Empire's banners until further notice. ]

Characters: Adelle and Hennesis
Where: Fluorgis, Jylland
When: 16th of Skyfrost/March
What: After several failed attempts over the course of the past six weeks or thereabouts, Adelle comes upon the shop of the apothecary Lezaford asked her to check on now open!
Warnings: None at this time!

With one hand at rest upon her hip and gold eyes that much brighter for the sunlight's insistence upon catching in them, Adelle stood before a very particular shop not for the first, but the seventh time in a little over two month's time. Persistent? Well, Lezaford had asked her to check up on the lady who ran the place and Adelle had every intention of indulging her friend in the favor even if her success in doing so was a bit late coming. She hadn't been able to help that, though. All prior attempts had ended in disappointment for a persisting "CLOSED" notice that, today at least, was absent with curtains opened as opposed to drawn. She wasn't about to give those curtains the opportunity to be drawn, for that matter, and was quick to step for the door and cross the threshold.

"Hell-o? Anyone home?"

Turning her eyes about the place curiously, she shut the door behind her. There was no point in locking it. Her business didn't quite require that level of secrecy as far as she'd been told. It had spurred her curiosity, however. A Helgas? They weren't exactly common. That this woman was reportedly Gifted, and with a Gift she was discouraged to attempt to acquire... well, that was a bit mysterious, wasn't it? It had sounded like Lezaford was more than a little familiar with her, too, which only made her that much curiouser.

Leaving the door behind her, Adelle took another few steps inside in the hopes of either spotting the proprietor or drawing her attention.

I'm quite determined to expand my newest line of ladies' accessories with toadskin. It will be all the rage. Check the Targ Wood for an oversized toad and bring me its skin.

[Vayne had first espied the flyer in another tavern, another day, and in some ways, another time. Since that date, much had changed, but the need for money remained the same. As someone wise had once said, death and taxes were the only sure things in life, particularly a social one.]

[To Jylland Vayne and Cid go, and after such a trip cooped up in the airship, Vayne himself is eager to stretch his legs, to shake off some of the dull overhang of the recent events he has read in his grimoire. The revivals are disturbing, and only serve to push the once Emperor to see that Ultima's goals, clouded in shadows as they are, come further to light.. He has naught but disinterest in wasting time.]

[When they disembark, the man takes to the map he has stuffed away in the recesses of his clothing from his recent trips to these areas, once more changed thanks to their efforts (and Vayne's personal disinterest in needless suffering at the behest of the altering elements). From the aerodome in Moorabella, Vayne sees they are secured transportation (as simply walking is not near fast enough for his liking - to be so distant from the port they have begun to make efforts to control is dangerous to say the least), they make their path to the Targ Wood, a quiet, beautiful area, particularly at such an hour of the morning, a small village nestled within its grasp.]

[The man turns to his companion, gesturing to the forest. A smile graces his lips.]
"'Tis a quaint place, no? One is left to wonder what sort of toad causes such interests to be ascertained with fulminating haste." [He is, of course, referring to the confident snobbery of the merchant they had cause to meet before they embarked on this venture. While Vayne has grown up with such snobbery, and indeed, it can be said to be an expected trait of Empires, or really anyone with any sort of pride, he is oft struck by how silly it all truly is.]

Later in the evening, back in Balfonheim Port...

[It had been a successful day, though by Vayne's reckoning, it could have gone better as easily as it could have gone worse. There were always options, and after his habitual flip through his grimoire to see if any responses or other terrible words and portents of misfortune had been scrawled, the Solidor sets about seeing his starting influence on the port itself has not waned. Vayne knows he himself cannot be as visible as Cidolfus, due to his history, but he can assure that some measures are taken, and that some members of the 9th have more favorable reports to turn to their superior - it's manipulative, but it's a game he knows well. ]

[ The plan had been simple enough. Go to Archades, listen in on some conversations - maybe even use her newfound abilities to ask the local rats - surely there had to be rats somewhere - if they had any information. Sell the information to someone who wanted it. Maybe even spin it into a story, see if anyone wanted her writing. Walk away richer. Buy cake. Easy.

The first flaw in the plan had been the first flaw with most of her plans, the part where she was too tall and too grey with ears that stuck out too much. The giant karakul she had befriended really didn't make her look any less out of place, either. She could have recovered from that. Probably. Just a little talking, maybe a little bribery- easy enough.

The second flaw in the plan had been that when the guard grabbed her a little more roughly than the little sheep approved of, it had sneezed him across the street and sprinted off. That was somewhat harder to talk her way out of.

And that was how Braids found her way to this cell. She doesn't seem too upset by it - it's an inconvenience, certainly, but nothing to get too worked up over. And all the Grimoires have to say about this whole incident is- ]

[Right after Basch's call, Penelo is a bundle of energy rushing about to collect her things and preparing to travel. She's trying to keep a cool head but her worry hasn't escaped Lironath who is sitting bolt upright, eyes swirling with alarm. The firelizards aren't much help as they too are in a terrible tizzy after being snapped awake mid-snuggle. Once her belongings are in order and ready to go, there's a bit of business she needs to address, but quickly. She's responsible enough to realize people are going to be more than a bit upset if she up and vanishes on them, so she'll need to leave notes.

...but that means couriers and sending her fussy pets on deliveries. Her eyes fall on her grimoire and she sighs. She doesn't like it. She doesn't like that it leaves her private life open to everyone to read about. She especially doesn't like not knowing who is seeing what and when. But. It is arguably the fastest way to leave messages with everyone, since she still doesn't know who does and doesn't have a phone. With a heavy and grudging sigh, she grabs the wretched book to scribble a general note for Vaan, Reks, Adelle and Mjrn.]

I was called away to Archades. Something's happened to Larsa and I need to get there as soon as possible. I'll do everything I can to help him, so don't worry about me. Vaan, can you look after Lironath and the fireli- and Sybaris? Aion's being pushy and insisting on coming. I should be back soon and hopefully with good news about Larsa. Don't forget that Lironath needs to be bathed and oiled in the morning. Her oil's in the blue jar on the shelf. If I'm not back by tomorrow night, she's due to feed the day after. You can take her out to the desert to catch a cockatrice or two, but no more no matter how greedy she gets. I don't want her getting Thicktail. Reks, I'm so sorry for rushing off so fast when we just got you back. I'll make it up to you, I promise.

Love, Penelo

P.S. Vaan, please try to stay out of trouble.

[With that business settled, she slings her satchel of medicines and a change of clothes over her shoulder. It takes her several more moments to calm Lironath and the firelizards from their frenzy of worry, and then to get one smug Aion settled on her shoulder for travel. Time is slipping away from her, and for all she knows from Larsa's life, and her impatience for the silliness is wearing on her temper. Eventually the little fair is squared away and the hateful grimoire stashed in the satchel as well. Not like the stupid thing would let itself be left behind anyway. Without wasting another second, she makes directly for the Gate Crystal, with a Teleport Stone already in hand ready to go.]

[It's late, nearly the midnight hour, when the air in the palace of Archades changes. Few will notice it. A mage here, a scholar there, but none know where it came from or what it is. It slips through the palace silently, having been given free reign over where it passes, dipping through the near-silent corridors until it finds its target.

The room is large and dim as the asp slithers in. None would suspect a snake, a desert snake, to have found its way here, but it has. The sleeping teenager is completely oblivious, as lost in rest as he is. At least, he is until the sting of the bite penetrates his dreams. A cry, soft at first blow and then building steam, breaks through the night until it's abruptly cut off. A thump follows and then a second, louder thump.

The asp has escaped and the Emperor has fallen.

It started far too easily and far too quickly.

For months now, the denizens of Nalbina have been full of discontent. The war has been over for more than three years, and yet the Archadian Empire has not given up the annexed town of Nalbina. The people have long resented the imperial presence which remains. The reasoning is that they are continuing to keep the peace, though everyone knows that "criminals" still get shipped off to Nalbina and never comes back. Those thrown into the bowels of the dungeon are never seen again, so rumors abound, and information remains scarce. Nonetheless, day by day, resentment and anger has been stewing at the border town. Today, it reached the boiling point.

No one saw the actual first incident. Only that an imperial guard was arresting a local carpenter and threatening him with a stay in the dungeons. A rock got thrown by someone in the streets that hit the unfortunate guard in the head. The guard dropped, the carpenter tried to make a break for it, chaos broke out with more soldiers trying to grab the culprit and another tackling the "criminal" worker. In a matter of seconds there were weapons being brandished against the citizenry and citizens making arms of hammers and shovels, and raiding nearby weaponry vendors for more potent ways of fighting back.

Within minutes, fires broke out, whether from arson or accident was anyone's guess. Blood and dead bodies, civilian and soldier filled the streets. Merchants were looted. Anarchy reigned in the streets and those who should have been bringing back order seemed more bent on fighting back, or at the very least preserving their own skins. And in all the chaos, every grimoire in Ivalice wrote within itself:

On this day, riots broke out in Nalbina, at great loss of life.

I have but a small request for any who see this.

Many know of the recent strikes going on in Bhujerba. Our workers are going unpaid due to delinquent payments, and while I urge those who are delinquent to make haste and settle their debts as quickly as possible, we cannot stop production.

I offer this: any who are able-bodied are welcome to come work. It will be without wages for a time until debts are settled, but when they are, any who have worked during the strike will receive double the normal wage. Work hard, and you will be rewarded. You have my word.

Blackfrost 8th
The first of the children fall ill starting around midnight of the 7th. Right away, their parents fear a resurgence of the Plague that decimated the Rabanastran population some nine years ago. Terrible timing too with the fete in the city and so many people gathered in one place. It's sure to spread. Symptoms come on rapidly in the young and the elderly: fever, sweats, nausea, stomach pains, labored breathing. They get worse as the disease progresses, with the afflicted body trying to purge itself of the pathogen causing the suffering. The sickness seems to be everywhere in Lowtown. There's not a single family that seems to be spared. Fear is building that an epidemic is at hand.

Blackfrost 9th
In the wee hours of the morning, the first wave of deaths begin. Almost every case it was one of the first to show symptoms in the first place and panic is in the air. Every healer, cleric, and alchemist are being called upon for healing or medicines, usually both. The more fearful of the people try to flee the city only to find they, or a loved-one, are too ill to travel. Those souls trying to bring succor to the suffering focus their efforts on alleviating the symptoms as they too believe this to be an outbreak of plague. They are all too aware that they are taking their lives into their hands treating the sick.

Blackfrost 10th
New cases of the illness are still breaking out, this time within the city proper. There is no rhyme or reason that any can discern, as people are coming down ill that had no contact with anyone from Lowtown. News of the deaths have been taken to the queen, and it's a good thing. A new problem is arising: so many have perished already that there are concerns of how to dispose of the deceased. An impromptu triage has been set up in the warehouses and streets of Lowtown. Anyone who is sick is brought below the city to prevent further spread of the disease. It's believed that the impoverished living below are already a lost cause. It's a terrible sight, truly. Body after body, in various stages of illness, are lined up like matchsticks on pallets on the ground. There aren't even beds anymore.

There is word that Queen Ashelia dispatched a team to assess the city's water source. Any who hear of this find it foolish. With so much sickness and death, why isn't the queen stopping the spread of the disease?

Blackfrost 11th
As the sun rises, a royal edict is announced. The royal city's water source has been poisoned and not fit for consumption. All are commanded to stay out of the Garamsythe Waterway until the waters can be purged. Water for the people is to be gathered in buckets and barrels from the unending rains in the Giza Plains. It is not disease which has afflicted Rabanastre, but poison. But the damage has been done with so many being improperly treated for illness rather than antidotes to cleanse the taint. The queen has commissioned every available and willing alchemist to purge the toxin from the waters, though that will take the remainder of the month at the very least. Healers and Clerics are urged to come into the city to treat the ill with whatever magicks or medicines they have at their disposal.

Remainder of the Month
The damage has been done. Far too many suffered under the poison consumed and perished, under the belief that plague was at hand. Lowtown is bloated with dead bodies, making it difficult for white mages and other healers to detect who is still in need of aid. Supplies of antidotes and remedies rapidly run out, causing any number of jobs to be posted in the pubs for the able bodied. Alchemists need more reagents to make more medicines. The faster one is treated and not left to languish with the poison inside them, the better their chances to survive. Magicks and medicines purge the system immediately but leave the patient coping with residual symptoms for a few days. Meanwhile, Clan Centurio takes the lead on water collection. Of course, they want a little compensation for their trouble, but only a little, you understand. They won't interfere with someone collecting their own rainwater to drink.
