[Right after Basch's call, Penelo is a bundle of energy rushing about to collect her things and preparing to travel. She's trying to keep a cool head but her worry hasn't escaped Lironath who is sitting bolt upright, eyes swirling with alarm. The firelizards aren't much help as they too are in a terrible tizzy after being snapped awake mid-snuggle. Once her belongings are in order and ready to go, there's a bit of business she needs to address, but quickly. She's responsible enough to realize people are going to be more than a bit upset if she up and vanishes on them, so she'll need to leave notes.

...but that means couriers and sending her fussy pets on deliveries. Her eyes fall on her grimoire and she sighs. She doesn't like it. She doesn't like that it leaves her private life open to everyone to read about. She especially doesn't like not knowing who is seeing what and when. But. It is arguably the fastest way to leave messages with everyone, since she still doesn't know who does and doesn't have a phone. With a heavy and grudging sigh, she grabs the wretched book to scribble a general note for Vaan, Reks, Adelle and Mjrn.]

I was called away to Archades. Something's happened to Larsa and I need to get there as soon as possible. I'll do everything I can to help him, so don't worry about me. Vaan, can you look after Lironath and the fireli- and Sybaris? Aion's being pushy and insisting on coming. I should be back soon and hopefully with good news about Larsa. Don't forget that Lironath needs to be bathed and oiled in the morning. Her oil's in the blue jar on the shelf. If I'm not back by tomorrow night, she's due to feed the day after. You can take her out to the desert to catch a cockatrice or two, but no more no matter how greedy she gets. I don't want her getting Thicktail. Reks, I'm so sorry for rushing off so fast when we just got you back. I'll make it up to you, I promise.

Love, Penelo

P.S. Vaan, please try to stay out of trouble.

[With that business settled, she slings her satchel of medicines and a change of clothes over her shoulder. It takes her several more moments to calm Lironath and the firelizards from their frenzy of worry, and then to get one smug Aion settled on her shoulder for travel. Time is slipping away from her, and for all she knows from Larsa's life, and her impatience for the silliness is wearing on her temper. Eventually the little fair is squared away and the hateful grimoire stashed in the satchel as well. Not like the stupid thing would let itself be left behind anyway. Without wasting another second, she makes directly for the Gate Crystal, with a Teleport Stone already in hand ready to go.]

It started far too easily and far too quickly.

For months now, the denizens of Nalbina have been full of discontent. The war has been over for more than three years, and yet the Archadian Empire has not given up the annexed town of Nalbina. The people have long resented the imperial presence which remains. The reasoning is that they are continuing to keep the peace, though everyone knows that "criminals" still get shipped off to Nalbina and never comes back. Those thrown into the bowels of the dungeon are never seen again, so rumors abound, and information remains scarce. Nonetheless, day by day, resentment and anger has been stewing at the border town. Today, it reached the boiling point.

No one saw the actual first incident. Only that an imperial guard was arresting a local carpenter and threatening him with a stay in the dungeons. A rock got thrown by someone in the streets that hit the unfortunate guard in the head. The guard dropped, the carpenter tried to make a break for it, chaos broke out with more soldiers trying to grab the culprit and another tackling the "criminal" worker. In a matter of seconds there were weapons being brandished against the citizenry and citizens making arms of hammers and shovels, and raiding nearby weaponry vendors for more potent ways of fighting back.

Within minutes, fires broke out, whether from arson or accident was anyone's guess. Blood and dead bodies, civilian and soldier filled the streets. Merchants were looted. Anarchy reigned in the streets and those who should have been bringing back order seemed more bent on fighting back, or at the very least preserving their own skins. And in all the chaos, every grimoire in Ivalice wrote within itself:

On this day, riots broke out in Nalbina, at great loss of life.

---

((OOC Info: The riots will be ongoing for the remainder of the month. Whether or not your character catches the entry in the grimoire, there are other ways to find out about them and get involved. People fleeing the town will be seeking refuge anywhere else, and often with naught but the clothes on their back. A few people with new fangled phones might wrong number (or right number?) call. People of all sorts are needed to help quell the violence and repair the damage. People are hurt and some have died. Businesses need security guards to protect them against looting. Homes and businesses will need rebuilt after the fires. Healers will be needed to tend the wounded. Brute strength is needed to stomp out aggression, and to potentially talk angry people down. This post is open for any and all riot interactions, single post logs, action threads, whatever. Have fun!))

[Feeling inexplicably guilty that she hasn't been around to help the people of Rabanastre during such a dire time, Mjrn jumps at the chance to provide it in the best way she knows how. That is, by hunting down a dangerous creature. It's a shame Ktjn isn't in any condition to join her, since she's always enjoyed teaming up with her fellow viera exile, but Mjrn's determined to see it through even if she has to do it alone. The young viera rushes around town, buying as much in the way of supplies as she can afford and carry, then she makes her way to the West Gate and beyond, to the Westersand.

The sky is cloudy, though at least there aren't any sandstorms at the moment. Mjrn isn't foolhardy enough to venture into one, hunt or otherwise. Her senses may not be the same after leaving the Wood, dimmed to some degree, but they're still enough for her to rely on them when venturing alone into the desert. She's not worried about being caught by surprise.

Her search is initially dull, encountering little more than wolves and an Urstrix here and there. Nothing she can't handle or avoid with ease, by now. In fact, she's just finished off one of the latter, when the flap of wings and a shriek suddenly catch her attention. She glances sharply skyward, falling back into a defensive position as she renews her Protect spell. Here it comes....]

[Lezaford's cottage in the Aldanna Range is exactly what one would expect of a centuries-old Archmage. If they were aware of his age or magical capabilities. Most don't and he likes it that way. Everywhere one looks in this simple dwelling, there are books. Books upon books. And more books. If anything seems oddly displaced, it's the suit of Judge's armor set off in one corner. Or maybe the Grimoire on his reading table.

He's expecting a guest, maybe two, sometime soon anyway. The number of guests about to cram into his small home is going to be a surprise. Once he pulls himself out of the book he's engaged in reading.]

To say that Queen Ashelia has spared no expense for this fete would be the understatement of the year. The palace grounds and gardens have been thrown open to any who would come to mark the anniversary of Dalmasca's restoration and the end of the war. A heightened guard is present to ensure that peace and order are maintained at all times, though they are kindly not obtrusive enough to make one feel ill at ease. It was the queen's wish above all else that her people be granted a brief reprieve from the pressures of life. A small happiness.

The entertainment alone must have cost a queen's ransom. There are dancers and musicians scattered throughout the crowds. A company of sword jugglers in the east garden. A fire eating Bangaa to the west. A lively group of acrobats flip and spin through the crowds, inducing oohs and ahhs as they go. The height of the evening is marked with a remarkable 30-minute fireworks display set to music by the court's musicians.

And the food! The queen has made arrangements for nearly all of the city's merchants to have a small booth to provide tasty delights for the party. Of course, none of the edibles are free, but they have all been paid amply enough that their base costs have been covered, so their charges for the nibbles are minimal. Most are offering finger foods and street snacks, in addition to the ample piles of nuts, fruits and tiny handheld loaves of bread. Pastries and petit fours abound in more than one corner, and naturally the enticing smell of spicy kabobs permeates the open air. The wine flows freely, at least until supplies have run out, though more than one person catches on quickly that Tomaj has watered it down. At least his ales are hearty enough to quench a parched throat. Cinnamon and mint teas are being offered to anyone who has drank their fill of more intoxicating liquids.

***

The internal party is far more subdued and dignified that the outside celebration. Only those with specific invitations are being allowed inside, and small wonder. Among the guests are the royal family of Rozarria, some of that nation's highest ranking generals, the young Emperor Larsa Solidor, a contingent of elite nobles from Archades, the Marquis Halim Ondore IV and his cortege. Then there are those who helped the queen reclaim her throne. She has insisted on their inclusion for their aid in the restoration of Dalmasca. This isn't as much a fete within, as it is a dangerous dance of political plays. There are smiles and well-wishes, but everyone present understands this is less about being friends and more keeping tabs on ones neighbors.

The entertainment present is like that outside, though in smaller in number and performers. Music is provided by the queen's own court musicians and plays all through the evening. While the entertainment has been scaled down for interior purposes, the banquet is anything but. The royal kitchens have been at work for days in advance preparing the most astounding and delectable creations they could: roasted poultry, rack of lamb, a whole suckling pig, little cakes shaped like birds and flowers, fresh fruits and nuts artfully displayed, wyrdhare pies shaped like rabbits, starfruit surprises in star shapes, tiny brioche filled with buttered wild mushrooms, toasted breads smothered in caramelized wild onions and melted nanna milk cheese. Truly a feast for the senses and not merely the mouth alone. The finest of the Dalmascan wines have been brought up from the cellar, a few bottles of Bhujerban Madhu as well. (Though the winemaster is keeping close eye on who has had how much of that.) If there is anything at all missing, it is the absence of drinking water, though who would choose something so basic when so much better is available?

( Letter to Adelle )

[Once her letter is posted, Penelo has some important business to attend to. She's one of the "lucky" few to be invited to the inner circle attendees for the fête. She is less than comfortable with the idea. Certainly she considers Larsa and Ashe friends, but it's still one Lowtown dancer in the company of nobles, royalty, and diplomats. She doesn't belong in places like that and she knows it all too well.

But go she truly must. It would offend and hurt Ashe if she didn't. So rather than shopping for a pretty dress for the occasion, she's in the market for something suitable to wear to the palace party. Not that she minds shopping, but it's turning out that what's appropriate for the evening far exceeds her budget and her practical sensibilities.

lightsvalkyrie: (do you really want to piss her off?)
[personal profile] lightsvalkyrie
[Good morning Rabanastre, isn't it a beautiful day today? The sun is shining, the birds are trilling, the Sky Fortress is blowing up-]

[Wait, what?]

[Yes indeed. For anyone paying attention in the afternoon in Rabanastre proper, it might be possible to spot a flash of light from the top of the abandoned, almost-a-memorial Sky Fortress Bahamut that had crashed not far from the royal palace. The following explosion is harder to ignore, as the top three or four floors of the Sky Fortress combust with a boom and rain down on the water around it - and, unfortunately, a little on the city as well. And it's a long way for all that metal to fall. It's hard to see against the always-scorching desert sun, but the light from the top of the fortress grows stronger with less to hinder it, and movement can be seen up there as well. Compared to the size of the Bahamut, the creature is puny, but what wouldn't be next to an airship fortress the size of a small country? The beast is large, and strong, and pissed off.]

[Rinoa had awoken on the top of the Sky Fortress, the wind blowing her hair all around and with absolutely no idea where she was. Angelo was by her side, and she immediately wrapped her arms around her faithful dog as if she was a safety net, as something inside her immediately recognized that she didn't feel Squall anywhere. Her knight, she needed her knight before something went wrong-]

[Which, of course, meant that something went wrong immediately. A structure-shaking roar sounds from behind her, the metal under her feet bouncing as something heavy stomps over it, and she spins with a shriek to see Yiazmat bearing down on her. Angelo growls, planting herself in front of her mistress and barking her head off in order to protect her, but Rinoa's new Sorceress powers react on instinct. In the absense of her Knight, of any of their friends, self-preservation kicks in in a massive way. With a flash of light, the glowing wings spring from her back, raising her into the air and subsuming her mind for the moment; Yiazmat roars and starts a charge as Rinoa lowers her arms to release a barrage of magic. Thundaga, Meteor, Poison, Firaga - she has no idea what she's casting at the thing trying to rip her to shreds, is barely even thinking herself, just wanting the thing to leave her alone. The top of the Sky Fortress can't take the battering the two combatants are giving it, and some of the magic slips past its intended target, and the floors fragment beneath their feet. Rinoa's wings save her from the fall and she grabs Angelo with a Float before the collie can fall, and Yiazmat doesn't seem bothered at all by the fact that it just dropped thirty feet straight down.]

[It's a question of who's going to last the longest at this point, because whoever can do that will be the winner.]
blessedsaint: (Saint Ajora)

[Despite the deluge being present south of Rabanastre, the skies over the city are clear and full of sunshine. It's the perfect day for an impromptu gathering, one such as the one massing outside the cathedral. The sun is nearing its zenith in the sky, but the crowds are ignoring the heat, for a chance to listen to the priest on the cathedral steps.

Ajora is unlike the other Kiltia priests. Rather than clothe himself in ornate and ostentatious robes with cloth-of-gold and jewels enough to feed a small city, he and his acolytes merely wear plain cloaks of simple cotton cloth. They appear, by all appearances, to be simple and humble, more concerned with the people and their needs than extensive and costly show of rank.

He is delivering a most stirring sermon about the goodness and light of Faram. The Father of Light alone is worthy of worship and his Paradise is nigh for all. It is a radical theology to many, but there is such an air of goodness about the priest, that is is hard to deny his doctrine. There is a promise of hope, of salvation from suffering and grief, which has e'er been the close companion of the Dalmascans since the Imperial Occupation. It is the tantalizing promise of relief, the promise of hope for the future that compels them to listen and believe.

After he is done speaking, he spends the next several hours blessing children, soothing and comforting the hurting, easing the discomfort of the downtrodden. He and his disciples distribute alms to the poor who come with open hands. If he grows weary, there is no sign of it, as a kind smile and a warm welcome is extended to anyone who approaches.]
lionsguard: ('to save → my lady!')

[ A dream is what Agrias would call this, all of this, had she the power to make such a declaration reality. She knows very well that it is too vast, too wondrous, too vivid in its composition and consistent in its execution to be any imagining of hers. Airships numerous are the things of the Mustadio's dreams and imaginings such that he would toil endlessly to bring proof of what she would deign a near mythical age to light, but hers? Her dreams are traditionally populated by neither airships, nor races of legend and saw neither before the party's battle with the Bloody Seraph two days in the past. That is, provided her impromptu slumber in the Salikawood had numbered hours and not days, not that she has any way of knowing the length of time lost with certainty, which is another nag about her mind.

What the lady knight knows is eyes upon her despite the shade she's found in the Eastern Plaza. Her armor and apparel make it necessary to shield herself from the hot sun. She's plenty of cause to argue her stationary position for actions she knows must be taken, but the shroud of uncertainty cast over her by circumstance has her stay action and relish thought before it now that she is awake and rested enough to consider her course. Her reflection ripples for a stone cast by some child at play and landed a short distance from her in the fountain around which she has claimed a perch, the mysterious grimoire she acquired at the scene of her battle against the Ultima Demon with Hennesis at rest atop her lap as she thinks. Where she doesn't move for the stone and its ripples, she turns her eyes to the skies for airship after airship blazing across the blue only to drop her gaze to the grimoire in her lap when they've passed.

Is this truly Ivalice? The book is flipped open, its pages turned to read the line declaring her arrival in this time, that place. If it is, it cannot the Ivalice of her time. Of this, she is certain, but of little else save that Ultima seems to have had some hand in her travel. To what end, she cannot say, but it seems likely given the presence of the Ultima Demon in the Salikawood. Other than that, she has little to go on save -- and her brows slowly lift as the words are written by some invisible hand across the page of the grimoire -- ]

"On this day, Ramza Beoulve arrived in Ivalice."

-- this. Save this, but with no location and no means to contact him for it. Agrias' brows are furrowed. The book has been faithful to events as they have played out, so she does not doubt the truth of the words. What she doubts is the possibility that any of this may make sense in due time. They had the two of them been present at the time of that explosion in the Airship Graveyard, yet they arrive one by one and apart? Apart, certainly, for she does not see any sign of him here. The Salikawood, perhaps? ]

Damn!

[ The book is closed with a single hand, her expression growing somewhat more somber as she moves to stand. If Ramza is indeed in this Ivalice, then what there is to be done must be done with greater haste. She will need gil to live, to travel, to find him. After they are reunited, they can discuss these events and hopefully come into some way to return to their rightful time, to -- and she halts in her steps before she takes the first -- pray tell, to what? ]

[If there's a sight that's been missing from Rabanastre for a long time, its that of Penelo scurrying about running errands and chores. When she was younger, her sunny head flitting around taking care of tiny tasks for Migelo was a common occurrence. Once again, she's got much to accomplish and she can be seen all about the city, though this time her matters are more personal and less shopkeeping.

There's the matter of catching up with local friends, including Mjrn. She'd dropped her Viera friend a note when she came back, but hasn't had the time to stop in and say hello until today. There's the necessity of hitting up Tomaj at the Sandsea for information and huffing at him when he tries to charge for it. Cid is missing. Vaan is missing. Those are serious enough to warrant finding out anything she can. There's the matter of people with grimoires not from Ivalice at all too. One of which is hauled up injured with Aion to keep tabs on him. She still needs to work out a more permanent solution of how and where to house a growing dragon too. It's almost too much to keep track of at once, but she must. It's necessary. And busy keeps her from fretting too much. Mostly.

She can be found all over the city at different points in the day. One stop at Clan Centurio to say hi and catch up. Shopping in the bazaar for supplies before she has to leave to investigate Cid and Vaan's whereabouts. Another stop in the Sandsea, firmly handling Tomaj and his gil grasping. Not to mention stopping in shops, a visit to Migelo, as well as one to Old Dalan.]

[ Upon sealing the letters with a rather distinct feline paw print, Adelle spares the open grimoire atop the desk at which she's seated a glance to find the contents of the letters scrolling across a page that was blank mere moments before. She's been diligent in observing the grimoire since she came upon it and is nothing short of pleased to see both birds fall solidly with one stone. These letters are an absolute necessity, but they've doubled as a test and if this doesn't count as a success, nothing does. Still, that she and Penelo have come into these books, each evidently intended for them, and as Penelo just returned from another world doesn't sit well with her with people claiming to be from other worlds allegedly appearing and Cid and Vaan being missing.

Adelle has got a lot of questions and not near enough answers to relax just yet.

Pushing herself up from her seat, the young woman reaches to pocket the letters and adjust the bow atop her head, tail swinging behind her. She's got a mail drop to make and a sprawling city to comb for answers. It's not long before she's out and about in Rabanastre's streets, her letters promptly sent. She's got a lot of ground to cover and she's well aware there's no way she'll cover it all in a day, what with the sheer size of the city and Lowtown underneath, too. Keen eyes are sharpened and equally keen ears opened.

[Unless you've been called to a hunt (or are planning on breaking and entering), there's really not much reason to be down in the waterway beneath Rabanastre. You'd hardly expect a girl that seemed to be in her early teens to be there, either. Certainly not.

But Lumina was there, with a book, of all things. A book that, at the moment, was blank. Well, that sure was boring, and she knew boring. What was less boring were her surroundings. Lumina was no stranger to transporting herself from one place to another almost instantly, but that sort of teleportation was limited to the habitable areas of Nova Crystallis. The rest was just a lot of dead world, eaten up by the Chaos. This place, wherever it was, was neither of those things.

Not in the Chaos. Not Nova Crystallis.

If she didn't know any better and not for that swirling mass of... whatever it was... behind her, she might have thought she'd done the teleporting deal herself. But nope. That seemed like a one way entrance and she'd just stepped out of it without being consulted first.]

Well, that's just peachy. [Bhunivelze if this is your doing...] Do you have anything to say for yourself yet? [She flicks through the blank book again. Nada. Stupid book. Lumina tosses it over her shoulder, only to have it bounce off something that objects with a squeak. That attracts her attention.

What's a Niblet doing here? Lumina bends down alongside it, holding her elbow as she taps her face. The book can stay in the damp and think about what it's done.]
That's some dedication, little guy. Did you manage to escape before she took you out? ["She" being Lightning, who wasn't-

No, wait.

That changes everything.]

Huh. I guess there's hope for this place after all. [But, more pressingly-] If we came out of that, do you think anyone else could?

But he has work to do. More pressingly still, he knows that his brothers and sister followed him and yet they are not here.

Most pressingly, however, he is not alone.

When the first arm swings toward him, he reaches to his boot for a knife that isn't there, only managing to duck away at the last minute. Without the luxury of time to check what he still has, let alone to stop to consider where his knives have gone (his lance, as well, the weight of it is more than significant enough to eliminate any possibility that he would have failed to notice the loss) he simply dives at the monster's bulk and slams his fist into it. A little too late, he realizes that the monster is made of stone...

...And yet the monster's stone hide shatters and his bones do not. An unexpected result, but not an unwanted one. Yet another thing to consider once the current matter is dealt with.]

[Golbez had appeared in the desert surrounding this city a few days ago, with a strange book, a monster to fight, and no idea how it had happened. Defeating the monster had taken a great deal of effort, and making his way out of the desert even more so, and by the time he had finally made it to a town, let alone this city, he'd been weary and disheveled.

It was probably true that his vagabond appearance hadn't helped matters any, but questions about where he is had yielded few answers, and asking how he'd gotten here had earned him more than a few strange looks, so by the time he arrives in Rabanastre, weary and rather disheartened, he's rather curt with everyone he comes across.

At first, he'd thought it akin to some work of the Gods, another battle for the fate of the worlds, but the presence of civilians and the unfragmented nature of the surroundings had convinced him otherwise. There had been that monster he fought, when he first found himself here, but other than that, things have been surprisingly calm. But he still has no answers, so when he finally finds himself in a city, he starts looking for answers. Not asking where he is, anymore, but asking about stories of strangers wandering lost, strange phenomena, anything that might explain what's going on.

And he keeps a lookout for anyone who looks as out of place as him, as he wanders the city. If he catches sight of someone who seems not to belong, no matter who, he'll approach. He's physically imposing, and at times intimidating, and he will use that to his advantage, if he needs to.]

[Nanaki has been here only a few days, and not only has he been spat out by a magic portal, his materia is useless, and he wound up in a city full of clans that would happily mistake him for a monster and turn him over for a bounty. Needless to say, he fled the city before he'd live up to his feral appearance and have to fight anyone.

So, he headed south through to Giza Plains, and while the area and the nomad villages remind him a little of home, he avoids those, too. He's caused enough misunderstandings already, and there are enough wolf-like monsters in this area that he could easily be mistaken for.

He's reached as far as one of the Sunstones and flops down in the shade it casts when a thought occurs to him -- his phone! Why didn't he try that before? He pulls it out, and delicately tries to use a paw to call Cloud. (He succeeds in bringing up games twice, and then accidentally texting a string of gibberish to Tifa and hitting 'SEND' before he can stop it. [So he really couldn't help himself. There had been some strange book on the table and Ceodore picked it up to see what it was. He thought it might be a gift from Ursula or something. Next thing he knew, there was a glaring light and then Outside Burning Sun. He's gotten used to the sun over the last few months he and Ursula spent governing the Skysea but this feels much hotter and intense.

He holds a hand up to shade his eyes so he can see and what he makes out is familiar. The tomb where Ursula arrived on Gaia. But why in the world is he here? Makes no sense at all. For a moment he suspects another bout with Memoria but that doesn't feel right either. He's alone, and definitely not experiencing a memory. Weird. These things weren't supposed to happen anymore. Not since they settled the Garland/Chaos problem months ago.

He reaches in his pocket for his skyphone to call Ursula first, then his parents. Mother will fret herself sick if she thinks he's gone missing. It's not working. Great. Off in some obscure part of the continent, phone is busted, not a moogle in sight.

Inside the tomb really isn't the best place to get out of the sun, but it's miserable cooking in one's own armor, so he turns to seek out the shelter of the derelict castle at the opposite end of the valley... only to find nothing more than an earthen corridor.]

Hey what gives?

[At this point though, shade is shelter and deserts are really hot. So Ceodore makes quickly for the narrow path into the rock. He follows it for a while until it opens up into what almost looks like a beach. Or it would if there weren't some sort of liquid sand spreading out to the horizon.]
