[Penelo has really come to despise these grimoires. They go around announcing everyone's business. They share things like Vayne being revived. Mostly it bothers her having her life on display whether she likes it or not.
Today she loves the grimoire and lets out a shriek of joy. Oh right, maybe should go find Vaan.]
[ In truth, Vaan has been trying to ignore his grimoire. It feels a little too nosy, and there's no fun in just following leads that aren't based in part on highly spurious rumors. So of course, he hadn't much reason to leaf through it for the latest update. ]
[ Whoa, face full of book. It's a little hard to read when it's a few inches from Vaan's face, so he takes a half-step back, frowning at Penelo. ]
Whoa, whoa, I... I can't read it like that. Let m-
[ It takes a few seconds for her words to hit him. ]
Reks is back? No, that can't... I...
[ He stares long and hard at the grimoire. There it is. Says it right on the latest page, plain and simple. He hadn't wanted to believe any of the rumors of revival- not Vayne, not Gabranth, not even Ashe's old husband. It was too strange. Too hard to swallow. But this was even harder somehow. ]
[She is thrilled. So much so that Vaan's hesitancy doesn't quite register, at least not at first. Penelo issues a huge hug, and then steps back, head tilting at Vaan as she realizes he's not as enthusiastic at the news as she is.]
[A couple of days have gone by with not a peep further about Reks and it has Penelo incredibly worried. As she should well be. The men responsible for his death, responsible for framing him as a conspirator in the king's murder, they are alive again and walking free in Ivalice. Just thinking about it frightens her horribly. What if they got to him first? She can't bear to think it. So she takes to scribbling furiously in her own grimoire, against her better judgment, because right now it's all she's got to work with.]
Reks? Can you see this? I don't know if you even have a grimoire, but if you do, please write something?
[A couple of hours pass and she's getting more worried. Yes logically he could just not have a grimoire, but she has to try anyway. Or maybe he doesn't recognize her handwriting after all this time...]
It's Penelo. Please answer if you see this? I'm worried about you.
[Oh, he'd never forget that handwriting. She's family to both him and Vaan, after all. But it does take Reks a while to get back to her. Even after finding that this book he's stuck with holds the exact same information as Rasler's and apparently writes itself, he doesn't realize that it can be used as a method of contact.
And when he sees what look like messages addressed to him, he's hesitant to respond. If she's trying to talk to him, then... does she have a book that shows the exact same things too? Is that what she means by a 'grimoire'?
Does Vaan have one too? If he does...
It takes him some time after her second message to attempt to answer]
Penelo? How
[A pause in that writing, as he wonders how to even put this. Can she even see what he writes? It seems far too fantastical - maybe there's something more to it? But he tries]
I can see your writing on this page. Can you see mine?
[It's strange to think that somehow, he's talking to Penelo through this odd book. At the same time, there's no denying that it's her writing]
We reached this hunter's camp just a little while ago. It's funny, I don't think I've ever been this far from home. What about you, are you in Rabanastre?
[Who's 'we'? He doesn't say. But he has seen that this book has recorded it since]
[It was years ago now, but Penelo remembers the white sands and blue waters. And hunters making halfhearted attempts at their work. Mostly excuses to linger on the beach though.]
We're in Nalbina right now. There's been riots. Vaan and I are trying to help.
But, you don't have to apologize, I'm just happy to have you back with us.
[To Reks, there's so much to apologize for. Vaan and Penelo were so young when his life ended. But he thinks it better not to debate the need of apologies]
It's good to hear from you.
Word's been going around about Nalbina. Are you both unharmed?
[Because that, more than anything, has concerned him. Whatever that being was who brought him back, she said no one was safe. And since then, he's only been able to wonder about the people he calls family]
I've been traveling with someone whose circumstances are similar to mine. We're actually headed that way, so you'll meet him.

Vaan?! VAAN! You have to see this!!
Re: [reaction / action for Vaan]
Huh? What's all the fuss about?
[action for Vaan]
It's Reks! He's alive again!
[She really is over the moon thrilled. After all, if Reks can be revived, so can her parents or brothers!]

[What a relief! Much as she'd rather not use the grimoires for communicating like this normally, sometimes you just have to do what you ahve to do.]
Are you okay? Where are you?
[And then because she has to say it, as it's been building up in her heart for years now:]
I have missed you so much.
